Snowcoaches are vehicles with tracks or large, low-pressure tires built for groomed snow roads. From West Yellowstone they leave daily for Old Faithful or the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Some companies also run photography tours, or snowcoach trips combined with skiing or snowshoeing, and you can book a single seat or a private coach. Destination Yellowstone

Quick facts

  • Over-snow season 2026–27: Dec 15, 2026 – Mar 15, 2027 for the West, South and East entrances and most groomed roads. Some interior roads close a little earlier (Mammoth–Norris Mar 7; Norris–Madison and Norris–Canyon Mar 9; Canyon–Fishing Bridge Mar 14). All dates depend on snow and weather. NPS
  • Guided only: in winter the only way to reach Old Faithful or the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a commercially guided snowmobile or snowcoach tour, or a permit from the park’s Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program. NPS
  • Cold: daytime temperatures are typically 0–20°F, and below zero is common at night and at higher elevations. NPS

West Yellowstone

🚗 98–112 min

The busiest starting point: daily tours to Old Faithful and the geyser basins, or to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Book directly with local operators. When we checked, Viator and GetYourGuide listed no West Yellowstone snowcoach tours.

Mammoth Hot Springs

🚗 104–124 min

The park lodging company runs a snowcoach twice a day between Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Old Faithful Snow Lodge, narrated by its guides. It also runs a daily shuttle from Bozeman’s airport for guests booked at Mammoth or the Snow Lodge.
