Where to stay near Yellowstone National Park: is Bozeman the right base?

Closest to the park gates, or a base for a bigger Montana trip? A fair comparison of the five main towns, by season.

Planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park? One of the most important decisions you’ll make is where to stay.

Yellowstone is enormous, with five entrances, scenic roads, famous geothermal attractions and wildlife-viewing areas spread across a vast landscape. The park service notes it can take several hours just to drive between entrances. NPS Choosing the right accommodation can make a big difference to your vacation.

Many travelers immediately look for hotels near the park gates. But depending on your itinerary, staying in the Bozeman area might be a better fit for your overall trip. In this guide we compare the best places to stay near Yellowstone National Park, explain the advantages of each location, and help you decide whether a vacation rental near Bozeman makes sense for your Montana adventure.

Where is the best place to stay near Yellowstone?

The best place depends on what you want to experience. If your main goal is to spend every day exploring Yellowstone, staying near one of the park entrances usually makes the most sense. But if you’re planning a longer Montana vacation that includes Yellowstone, Big Sky, scenic drives, hiking and restaurants, Bozeman deserves serious consideration.

Closest to the park vs. a broader Montana base

It helps to separate two questions. Closest-to-park lodging (West Yellowstone, Gardiner) minimizes driving to one entrance. A Montana vacation base (Bozeman, Belgrade, Livingston, Big Sky) trades some park time for an airport, more dining and more to do on non-park days.

1. Bozeman: a great base for a Montana adventure

Bozeman offers something smaller Yellowstone gateway towns may not: a wider variety of activities and amenities beyond the national park. Surrounded by mountain ranges and valleys, it combines outdoor recreation with a lively downtown, restaurants, breweries, shops and cultural attractions. It’s especially appealing if Yellowstone is one highlight of a larger Montana vacation.

Why stay in Bozeman?

Convenient airport access. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) is one of the airports the park service lists with year-round commercial service. NPS Staying around Bozeman simplifies the start and end of your trip, especially if you plan to explore several destinations.

More to explore beyond Yellowstone. From Bozeman you can reach:

  • Downtown Bozeman and its restaurants and shops
  • Museum of the Rockies
  • Hyalite Canyon and outdoor recreation
  • Scenic trails in the surrounding mountains
  • Gallatin Valley attractions
  • Big Sky and the Gallatin Canyon (see things to do in Big Sky)
  • Day trips toward Yellowstone (see our Yellowstone day trip from Bozeman)

A flexible home base. If you’re visiting Montana for five to seven days and spending only one or two of them in Yellowstone, Bozeman can be an excellent choice. You can enjoy different experiences without changing accommodation every night. Traveling with children? Our Bozeman with kids guide has ideas for the non-park days.

Is Bozeman too far from Yellowstone?

That depends on your plans. Bozeman is not immediately outside the entrance gates. Visiting the park requires a substantial drive, and the time depends on the entrance, weather, traffic and where in the park you’re going. Remember that reaching an entrance is not the same as reaching Old Faithful or Grand Prismatic Spring. Inside the park the speed limit is 45 mph unless posted, and Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone are about 50 miles apart. NPS

If you intend to visit Yellowstone on several consecutive days, a gateway town may be more convenient. If you’re combining one or two Yellowstone excursions with other destinations in southwestern Montana, Bozeman can work very well.

Consider a vacation rental

For travelers staying several nights, a vacation rental can offer more room than a hotel room, a kitchen for easy breakfasts before an early park start, and a place where families or groups can spread out. Compare locations, sleeping arrangements and amenities before you book.

2. West Yellowstone: closest to the western park attractions

West Yellowstone sits right at the West Entrance. NPS estimates about 30 minutes from the West Entrance to Madison Junction and another 35–45 minutes to Old Faithful. NPS That makes it the practical choice if your trip centers on the geyser basins. In winter it’s the hub for guided over-snow trips; see West Yellowstone snowmobile tours. The trade-off: a small town with fewer non-park options, and a seasonal airport.

3. Gardiner: gateway to the northern park

Gardiner is at the North Entrance, about 15 minutes from Mammoth Hot Springs by NPS estimates, and on the only park road open to regular vehicles year-round, through Lamar Valley to Cooke City. NPS It suits wildlife watchers and winter visitors who want to drive into the park themselves. It’s a small town, so plan meals and supplies.

4. Big Sky: mountain resort living

Big Sky is a mountain resort community on US-191 between Bozeman and West Yellowstone, with skiing in winter and hiking, biking and rafting in summer. It’s a strong pick for a resort-style trip; see Bozeman vs Big Sky for a side-by-side look.

5. Livingston: historic charm and Paradise Valley

Livingston is a historic railroad town east of Bozeman on the road south through Paradise Valley to Gardiner. Choose it for small-town character and scenic drives on the way to the North Entrance.

  • The road from the North Entrance (Gardiner) through Mammoth and Tower Junction to the Northeast Entrance and Cooke City is the exception, open year-round, weather permitting.
  • Guided snowmobile and snowcoach travel runs Dec 15, 2026 – Mar 15, 2027 on most groomed roads. See Yellowstone winter tours.
  • In 2026, the first roads opened to cars on Apr 17 and most closed Oct 31.

Before choosing accommodation or planning your route, check opening and closing dates, current conditions, weather restrictions, construction delays and entrance access on the official page: Yellowstone National Park Road Conditions (NPS). GPS may not reflect current road status.
