The essentials

  • Over-snow season 2026–27: Dec 15, 2026 – Mar 15, 2027 for the West, South and East entrances and most groomed roads. Some interior roads close a little earlier (Mammoth–Norris Mar 7; Norris–Madison and Norris–Canyon Mar 9; Canyon–Fishing Bridge Mar 14). All dates depend on snow and weather. NPS
  • Guided only: in winter the only way to reach Old Faithful or the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a commercially guided snowmobile or snowcoach tour, or a permit from the park’s Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program. NPS
  • Open to cars all winter: only the road from the North Entrance (Gardiner) through Mammoth Hot Springs and Lamar Valley to Cooke City. NPS
  • Hours on groomed roads: 7 am – 9 pm (the South and East entrance roads open at 8 am). Recreation.gov
  • Cold: daytime temperatures are typically 0–20°F, and below zero is common at night and at higher elevations. NPS

Dates, rules and schedules change. Check with the park and your tour company before you go.

Three ways to see Yellowstone in winter

Snowcoach tour

A heated, over-snow van or bus with a driver-guide. It’s the warmest way to reach Old Faithful or the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and good for families and photographers. Tours leave daily from West Yellowstone, and there’s also snowcoach service from Mammoth Hot Springs.

Guided snowmobile tour

Drive your own sled in a guided group on groomed park roads. It’s more adventurous, colder and more physical. Drivers need a valid driver’s license, and each operator sets its own age rules.

Wolf & wildlife safari

A guided day by vehicle on the northern road, the one park road open to cars all winter: Mammoth Hot Springs, then Lamar Valley at dawn for wolves, bison and elk. Several of these tours pick you up in Bozeman and can be booked online.

Booking tips

  • Book early. Over-snow tours have limited seats and sleds, and the Christmas–New Year and Presidents’ Day weeks are the busiest.
  • Read the cancellation policy. Policies vary, and some listings are non-refundable.
  • Check what’s included. Park entrance fees, gear, meals and guide gratuities are handled differently by each company.
  • Plan the drive. US-191 through the Gallatin Canyon is a winding mountain road. Allow extra time in snow, and rent an AWD/4WD car with good tires. Compare rental cars ↗ (affiliate link)
  • Dress for real cold. Layers, a warm hat, insulated gloves and traction aids for icy boardwalks. NPS winter tips

Frequently asked questions

When is the 2026–27 winter season in Yellowstone?

Guided over-snow travel runs from December 15, 2026 to March 15, 2027 on most groomed roads. A few interior roads close between March 7 and March 14. All dates depend on the weather (National Park Service).

Can I drive my own car into Yellowstone in winter?

Only on the road from the North Entrance at Gardiner through Mammoth Hot Springs and Lamar Valley to Cooke City. Every other park road is closed to cars from early November and open only to guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches from mid-December.

Do I need a guide to snowmobile in Yellowstone?

Yes, unless you win a permit in the Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Access Program. The lottery runs August 1–31 on Recreation.gov. Leftover and cancelled permits are released first-come, first-served from October 1. Permits cost $40 a day plus a $6 application fee, the group leader must be 18+, and every sled must meet the park’s New BAT standard.

Snowcoach or snowmobile: which is better?

A snowcoach is warmer and easier, and works for most ages and fitness levels. A snowmobile is more adventurous but colder and more tiring, and drivers need a valid driver’s license. Both reach Old Faithful.

Can I book West Yellowstone snowmobile or snowcoach tours on Viator or GetYourGuide?

When we checked in October 2026, Viator and GetYourGuide did not list any snowmobile or snowcoach tours that start in West Yellowstone. Book those directly with an authorized local operator. The one Old Faithful winter tour we link online is a multi-day trip from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on GetYourGuide.
